Waterford Whisky Sheestown 1.2 is a testament to the rich agricultural heritage and deep historical roots of Irish whiskey. Crafted by Waterford Whisky, a distillery renowned for its commitment to expressing the unique characteristics of Ireland’s diverse terroirs, Sheestown 1.2 is distilled from barley specifically selected from the fertile fields of Sheestown, a region defined by its rolling lowlands and well-drained loamy soils.
Historical and Geographical Significance
Baile an fhasaigh, translated as 'the place of the lush grass,' is an ideal location for barley cultivation. This area was first inhabited by the Shees clan in the 15th century, west of the Nore River. Sheestown, named after this pioneering family from Kerry, features a landscape defined by limestone and sandstone. This creates a rolling, lowland terrain with well-drained loamy soils, interspersed with gravel outcrops and drier hilltops, perfect for agriculture. For over fifty years, Philip O'Brien has cultivated this land, and his daughter, Maura, now contributes to our distillery, linking family tradition with our whisky production.
Historically, Sheestown was deeply connected to the Shees family, who were staunch supporters of the House of Butler, the earls of Ormonde, during the 15th century. The family's legacy includes Sir Richard Shee, who served as the deputy to the Lord Treasurer of Ireland under Queen Elizabeth. However, the family's fortunes changed when Marcus Shee was declared a Jacobite and exiled in 1691, eventually fleeing to France. His lineage continued its notable history abroad; one of his descendants became the Duke of Feltre, a prominent figure who served as Napoleon Bonaparte’s Minister of War.
